Parent Programs

This is a required foundation course for all families. 

  • Introduction to autism spectrum disorder
  • Navigation of available resources and support systems
  • Overview of our comprehensive training series
  • Next steps for your family's journey All families begin with this foundational course
  • All families are enrolled in this class or Understanding Disabilities during intake.
  • This class is provided in English and Spanish, in-person and virtual.
  • Teaches parents what it means when their child has a disability.
  • Explains next steps for supporting their child’s needs at home, in school, and in life.
  • Introduces the ABC of Southwest Texas program and the Autism Services Program course series.
  • All families are enrolled in this class or Understanding Autism during intake.
  • This class is provided in English and Spanish, in-person and virtual.
  • Introduces two toilet training methods to help parents develop individualized plans.
  • Includes a Toilet Training Guide for all participants.
  • Provides a free Toilet Training Kit after completing a post-class survey.
  • This class is provided in English and Spanish, in-person and virtual.
  • Covers the basics of home safety, including:
    • Elopement prevention
    • Water safety
    • General household safety concerns
  • Provides handouts and a free Home Safety Kit after completing the class survey.
  • Helps families create safer home environments and prevent accidents.

  • Teaches age-appropriate cleanliness routines.
  • Shares practical strategies to help children build independence and confidence in daily hygiene.
  • Social narratives, visuals, and schedules provided.

  • Offers a guided discussion for families coping with an autism diagnosis.
  • Provides a safe, encouraging space for parents to share experiences and information.
  • Promotes mutual support and connection among families.
  • This support group is provided in English and Spanish
  • Based on the Safety Care for Families curriculum.
  • Equips parents and caregivers with skills to improve behavior and safely manage challenging or dangerous incidents.
  • Conducted as a 1.5-hour session.
  • Pairs effectively with Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) seminars to create a comprehensive approach to behavior support and prevention.

Seminar 1: Positive Parenting for Children with a Disability

  • Introduces the core principles of positive parenting.
  • Designed for parents of children with developmental disabilities (e.g., autism, intellectual disability, Down syndrome).
  • Focuses on applying positive parenting strategies to children with disabilities.

Seminar 2: Helping Your Child Reach Their Potential

  • Builds on Seminar 1’s principles.
  • Focuses on promoting skill development in children with disabilities.

Seminar 3: Changing Problem Behavior into Positive Behavior

  • Explains the reasons behind problem behaviors.
  • Provides practical strategies to encourage positive behavior.

ABC Cadet Training Class

Any of these classes can be tailored to be provided to teachers, teacher aides/paraprofessionals, childcare providers, community health workers, clinicians, and anyone else requiring additional information on these topics.
